NaNoWriMo: Year Two

November has come to an end taking National Novel Writing Month with it. Fifty thousand words in thirty days? What a bitch.

2013 was my second year participating. Last year produced the very rough first draft of Prayer for the Dead. This year I began writing the second book in the Revenants in Purgatory series. I managed to complete the task and "won" NaNo again. However, December 1st sent me into a weird depression that I'm beginning to think might be normal... or maybe it's only normal for me.

I haven't written anything in days. NaNo is so tight and structured that when it comes to an end, I feel lost. The second book isn't finished, hell the first draft isn't even close, yet I feel like I'm stumbling around in the dark, not knowing which direction to turn.

Why am I telling you all of this? No reason, but writing this post made me feel a tiny bit productive. My hope would be that somewhere, out there, there's another writer, sitting at the keyboard, suffering from the same post NaNoWriMo blues and this post will prove we're not alone.

We can't allow NaNo to beat us though! Crawl out from the shadow of the monumental accomplishment of writing fifty thousand words, stand up and raise the question with me...

Um...excuse me, but where the hell do I go from here?

  1. Cheer up, Nicki. I can tell you where you will go from here: UP!

Prayer for the Dead is spectacular. I am really looking forward to reading Book 2. November is over, and the big push is done. It is natural to feel a bit toasted. I once wrote 10,000 words in 3 days. I've never done anything close to that before or since. I can't imagine sustaining even half of that pace for an entire month. If I had participated in NaNoWriMo, I think I would probably be ready for a week at the Rubber Room Hotel. You have accomplished something special. You will continue that work when you are ready, and it will be amazing, I am sure.
